If Trump loses, will he accept the result? Will his followers? History tells us no. The last time Donald Trump was defeated, he incited a violent mob to storm the Capitol. This was an assault on the heart of American democracy while he sat in comfort, watching it unfold on television.
His refusal to accept the will of the people directly led to the chaos, destruction, and loss of life on January 6th. He poses a threat to democracy as his actions continue to undermine the foundations of democratic governance.
Let us not forget, Trump didn't choose not to run with Mike Pence again simply because he “doesn't like him.” It’s because Pence had the courage, just once, to stand for the Constitution over Trump’s fragile ego.
In true Trump fashion, he cannot tolerate anyone who challenges him. Anyone who dares cross him is met with immediate dismissal or public humiliation. This is a man who surrounds himself with sycophants, not public servants, because his narcissism demands it.
But this isn’t just about Trump’s inability to handle defeat; it’s about what his continued presence in politics means for democracy itself. His actions are a direct threat to the foundational principles of a democratic society. His lies about election fraud have poisoned the minds of millions, leading to a dangerous erosion of trust in democratic institutions.
If Trump loses again, the question isn’t just whether he’ll accept it. The question is whether his followers will once again be mobilized to reject reality, resorting to violence in defense of a man who has shown time and again that he values power over patriotism, division over unity, and autocracy over democracy.
The danger isn't just Trump himself, but the cult-like movement he's fostered. It's a movement which places loyalty to him above loyalty to the country. Democracy can survive a lot of things, but it cannot survive the unchecked rise of a man who believes he's above the law, above the people, and above the Constitution itself.
